How to get from Jomo Kenyatta airport to Nairobi
Compare ride-hailing, pre-booked transfers, taxis and the rail connection from JKIA to the CBD, Westlands, Karen and Nairobi Terminus.

For most first-time arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA, code NBO), the practical choice is a ride-hailing car or a transfer arranged by the accommodation. Both provide a direct trip and avoid changing between public-transport services with luggage.
Use your exact hotel or apartment as the destination when comparing options. Nairobi’s CBD, Westlands and Karen require different routes, traffic is variable, and use of the tolled Nairobi Expressway can affect the price.
The options at a glance
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Uber or Bolt | Most independent visitors with mobile data | Live price, wait and pickup point can change |
| Hotel or pre-booked driver | Late arrivals, families and larger luggage loads | Must usually be arranged before arrival |
| Airport taxi | Arrivals without a working ride app or data | Agree on the full fare and payment method first |
| Kenya Railways bus and commuter train | Light luggage and a well-timed arrival | Limited schedule and a bus–train change |
| Direct commuter bus or matatu | Travellers already familiar with the network | Current routes and terminal boarding details are hard to verify in advance |
Ride-hailing: the simplest independent option
Uber and Bolt offer pickups at JKIA. Wait until you have collected your bags and are ready to go before requesting an on-demand car.
The meeting point may not be beside the nearest terminal exit. Uber directs passengers to use the pickup instructions shown after booking, while Bolt says the current JKIA pickup point appears in its app.
Before entering the car:
- Match the registration, make and colour with the app.
- Check the driver’s name and photo where provided.
- Do not switch to a substitute car offered verbally.
- Keep the trip in the app rather than cancelling it for a newly negotiated fare.
Choose the vehicle category for the group and its bags, not merely the passenger count. Uber says cargo capacity varies by the actual vehicle and is not guaranteed.
Check the live quote after landing rather than relying on an old fare online. Uber says its NBO price depends on factors including ride type, estimated distance and duration, tolls, city fees and demand; Bolt likewise directs passengers to its app for the current cost.
Hotel or pre-booked transfer
A transfer arranged through your accommodation reduces uncertainty after a late arrival and can be useful for children, equipment or several checked bags. Ask for the following in writing:
- total price in Kenyan shillings;
- whether airport parking, waiting time and the Expressway toll are included;
- vehicle size and luggage capacity;
- meeting point and name-board procedure;
- treatment of a delayed flight; and
- a working phone or WhatsApp contact.
Verify the driver against the name and number supplied by the hotel or operator before leaving arrivals. A name board by itself is not verification.
Airport taxi
If you cannot use an app, use an identifiable airport taxi desk or a driver arranged by the accommodation. Give the exact property name and a saved map pin, then establish the complete fare in Kenyan shillings before the bags are loaded. Ask whether any Expressway toll is included and which payment methods are accepted.
Avoid an unsolicited off-app ride. The US State Department’s Kenya travel information says US citizens using off-the-street taxis have been victims of robbery, kidnapping and extortion. Its warning is written for US travellers, but the practical precaution—use a traceable booking or pre-arranged driver—is useful more broadly.
Does the Nairobi Expressway make sense?
For the CBD and Westlands, ask the driver to compare the Expressway with surface roads using live traffic. The official toll schedule identifies a JKIA entrance and exits including Capital Centre, Haile Selassie, Museum Hill and Nairobi Westlands. The Expressway operator lists current notices and payment methods, including cash and mobile money for motorists.
Do not rely on a historic toll quote. The official base-rate notice says rates may be adjusted for inflation and exchange rates.
Destination matters:
- CBD: Haile Selassie provides an Expressway exit into the CBD, but congestion can remain on the final streets.
- Westlands: Museum Hill or the Westlands end may be useful, depending on the exact address.
- South B, South C or Upper Hill: A driver may use only part of the Expressway or remain on surface roads; compare live routes.
- Karen: Do not assume the route should pass through the CBD. Ask the driver to compare the Southern Bypass side with the city route.
- Nairobi Terminus: For a Madaraka Express connection, enter Nairobi Terminus, not Nairobi Central Station. They are different stations.
A toll road cannot remove congestion between the terminal and its entrance or between the chosen exit and the accommodation.
Kenya Railways bus and commuter train
There is no passenger railway platform at the airport terminal. Kenya Railways publishes a bus link between JKIA and Embakasi Village Railway Station, where passengers can change to a commuter train for Nairobi Central Station.
The airport-bus schedule published by Kenya Railways in 2025 identifies Embakasi Village, the cargo area and Central Square as key stops. It lists a KSh50 bus fare and says tickets are bought onboard. The service is timed rather than turn-up-and-go.
Kenya Railways’ published commuter timetable is older, but it shows the Embakasi Village train running through Pipeline, Donholm and Makadara to Nairobi Central Station. It does not provide a through train to Westlands or Karen.
Treat the documents as a route guide, not proof of the service operating unchanged on your arrival date. Confirm both the airport bus and the onward train with Kenya Railways before choosing this option. It is most plausible for a lightly packed passenger with a well-timed daytime arrival and a destination near the CBD; a delay or missed connection removes much of its advantage.
What about a direct public bus?
Kenya’s Ministry of Transport announced new routes from JKIA in November 2023, in partnership with Metrotrans and Super Metro. That launch notice does not give destinations, terminal boarding points, frequencies or fares, and it does not establish the routes’ status in 2026.
Do not build an arrival plan around those buses without current confirmation at the airport. The State Department also notes that criminals target matatus because they carry multiple passengers. For an unfamiliar visitor with luggage, a traceable direct car or a confirmed Kenya Railways connection is easier to plan.
A simple arrival plan
Before flying, save the accommodation’s exact map pin and contact number, and install any ride apps you intend to use. If booking a transfer, keep the driver and meeting details available offline.
After collecting your bags, compare the live app price with any pre-arranged quote. For a taxi, settle the total fare, toll treatment and payment method before departure. For the CBD or Westlands, ask whether the route and quote assume the Expressway; for Karen, ask which side of the city live traffic supports. If choosing public transport, verify both legs on the day.
